Comeback for the Sauce, Stay for the Fellowship

KANAKEE – On the right day, from 11 a.m. to until the food runs out you can catch a whiff of bbq and likely a crowd gathering.

Follow the crowd (and the smell) to a large black food truck with a caution to its patrons:

“WARNING: the contents inside may be too delicious to handle… consume at your own risk.”

Brother George’s BBQ known for its addictive comeback sauce was founded by Champaign born and raised George Smith.

Smith, a proud man of God, named his truck to honor that relationship.

“My father’s Jesus and I am not ashamed,” Smith said. “He blessed me with this business to be a blessing to our people in the community.”

With a line that stretches down the sidewalk and music playing, the truck fosters a cookout, family get together vibe.

For Smith, this is his contribution to serving the community.

“God has blessed me with this business and I just want to be a blessing to any community I go in and out of,” Smith said.

The side of the trick advertises their rib tips, chicken and pulled pork but the most popular item is more of a combination.

“One of my most popular menu items is the comeback fries which are french fries with hot cheddar cheese with pulled pork or shredded chicken on it and our famous comeback sauce – mild, medium or hot,” Smith said. “Also we have some of the best rib tips you can get, they are tender and juicy and meaty.”

Right now they are sticking to the truck, which can be located through their Facebook page, Smith does hope to expand to a permanent location in Urbana in the near future.

“I am grateful for the gift [God} has given me of cooking BBQ,” Smith said.
